چکیده

During May 1988 a 1230-m ice thickness profile was drilled across a floe in Fram Strait. The probability density function of this data set corresponds closely to extensive ice draft measurements from submarines and the thickness distribution of floes sampled randomly in the area. The observed similarity is attributed to the topography of the pack ice in Fram Strait where each floe is composed of a spectrum of smaller components. This may imply that mutual independence and representativeness of thickness measurements can be satisfied to some degree even for short profiles.

Investigation of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness using Space-borne Polarimetric SAR data

Space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been widely used to produce ice concentration (type), ice motion, ice charting (operational route planning), and iceberg detection. Recent availability of polarimetric SAR sensors (e.g., TerraSAR-X, RADARSAT-2, and ALOS PALSAR) enables us to explore the full potential of polarimetric data to derive sea ice information. Among the many sea ice ...

A Study on Extracting the Trend of Thin Ice Distribution in the Sea of Okhotsk Using Amsr-e and Amsr2 Data

Passive microwave radiometers onboard satellite can penetrate clouds and can monitor the global sea ice distribution on daily basis. It is not easy to extract sea ice thickness information from satellite data. In 2012, the authors have developed a method to detect thin ice area using the brightness temperature data derived from the passive microwave sensor AMSR-E onboard Aqua satellite. The bas...

Multisensor data and thermodynamic sea-ice model based sea-ice thickness chart with application to the Kara Sea, Arctic Russia

We introduce a method to construct an ice thickness chart using two satellite datasets and a one-dimensional high-resolution thermodynamic snow and sea-ice model (HIGHTSI). Thin-ice thickness up to 40 cm is retrieved using MODIS ice surface temperature data. For thicker ice, thickness is retrieved from a combination of SAR image and background level ice thickness chart Hi provided by HIGHTSI. B...

Using MODIS data to estimate sea ice thickness in the Bohai Sea (China) in the 2009–2010 winter

[1] To estimate sea ice thickness over a large spatial scale is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a direct approach to effectively estimate sea ice thickness over a large spatial area of the Bohai Sea using EOS MODIS data. It is based on the model of an exponential relation between albedo and thickness of sea ice. Eighteen images of EOS MODIS L1B data in the 2009–2010 winter were used to e...

Linking Regional Winter Sea Ice Thickness and Surface Roughness to Spring Melt Pond Fraction on Landfast Arctic Sea Ice

The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased strongly in extent, thickness, volume and age in recent decades. The melt season presents a significant challenge for sea ice forecasting due to uncertainty associated with the role of surface melt ponds in ice decay at regional scales. This study quantifies the relationships of spring melt pond fraction (fp) with both winter sea ice roughness and thicknes...
